We usually don’t associate the word joy with effort. We normally associate it with some kind of pushing or unpleasant exertion. From the point of view of buddhist psychology, effort is actually a light joyful mind. In this two part series we will explore how to cultivate a mind that is like a child at play and in this way sustain our enthusiasm while traveling on our spiritual journey.

Overwhelmed by your feelings? Buddhist psychology offers a time-tested, powerful and healthy approach to dealing with painful, challenging emotions. Each week, we will apply these methods to states like craving, anger, jealousy, and self-hatred. First, we need to recognize them, learn how they work, and accept ourselves for where we are, Next, we can disempower them using special meditations. Finally, we can envision and even experience a state of total freedom and release, having transcended these difficult emotions.

About the Teacher
Kadam Sharon has been practicing meditation and Kadampa Buddhism since 2003 and is the Resident teacher of the Je Tsongkhapa Kadampa Meditation Center in Asheville. Before Sharon moved to Asheville in 2011, she volunteered as the Education Program Coordinator for several years at the internationally renowned world peace temple for meditation and modern Buddhism, Kadampa Meditation Center New York. There she received teachings and guidance directly from our General Spiritual Director, Gen-la Kelsang Dekyong, guided retreats, and taught classes. She has engaged in numerous focused meditation retreats and is known for teaching others how to develop a peaceful mind with great skill, lightness, and humor. Today, Sharon is a part of the Special Teacher Training Program and teaches numerous meditation classes and retreats in Asheville, NC and Greenville, SC. Sharon and her husband have one son.
